Types of Scissors

A large variety of scissors utilized in the surgical suite to include many types of scissors in lengths, styles, curved, straight, sharp, and blunt.

In general, curved scissors used to cut and dissect tissue. Straight scissor used for cutting sutures and any tissue when a smooth, straight cut such as a damaged nerve or blood vessel. Scissor used for probing, dissecting, and spreading the tissue.

This scissor should don’t use to cut paper or tubing. Bandage scissors utilized for this specific purpose only.

Major types of scissor include

Mayo scissor, identified by heavy curved or straight blades with rounded tipsscissors

Metzenbaum (Metz) scissor, similar to Mayo only lighter in pattern and more delicate

Iris (dissecting) scissor, resembling cuticle scissor but more delicate in style. Operating or general scissor used for cutting sutures and gauze.

The heavier types used for cutting fine wire sutures and identified by angular blades with serrated edges with a grove for holding the wire to cut. Tungsten carbide Scissor cutting edges which provide finer cutting with longer lasting wear.
