Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy-ESWL

ESWL medical abbreviation-Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy used to treatment of the Kidney stone less than 2 cm in size. The stone sizes reduce into small fragments using this procedure.

It produces uses sound waves (also called shock waves) to break these stones into small pieces. It focuses on shock waves that pass through the tissue and fluids and stones.

Used in kidneys and gall bladder stones rarely.

The recommended waves for fragments- 1500

 

The bigger stones break into small fragments using a continuous flow of shock waves on a focused point. The fragments excrete in urine through the ureter and bladder.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in Ultrasound 

Ultrasound plays an important role in locating the calculi. After fixing the ultrasound probe during the procedures. Sometimes Fluoroscopy took to confirm the location and size of the stone/calculi.

Use ultrasound 2% Lignocaine jelly for Ultrasound probe

Anesthesia 

Some patients need regional anesthesia but rarely need General anesthesia

Normal sedation and premedication were sufficient for normal healthy patients.

No Oral fluids and IV fluids were administered before and during the procedure.

Monitor the normal vital and Blood pressure during the procedure. If patients complain of severe pain, stop the procedure for a moment and restart

Magnesium stone

Ammonium phosphate stone

Not recommended for the cystine stone, due to the physical properties of the stone

After the procedure, the small fragment passes and is excreted within a week

Risks

UTI

Bleeding around the area where the stones crushed

Inability to pass urine if stone fragments block your urinary tract.

No water taken before the ESWL procedure, avoid alcohol for 24 hours.

Immobilization and cooperation are needed during the procedures
